Reading for pleasure is linked with better cognitive performance, mental well-being and brain health across the lifespan, according to a 2026 editorial review in Psychological Medicine. The authors brought together findings from surveys, long-term cohort studies, brain-imaging research and behavioral studies rather than reporting results from one new clinical trial.

In children and teenagers, early enjoyment of reading has been linked with better attention, memory, planning skills and school achievement, along with fewer mental health problems. In adults, surveys have associated reading with less stress, greater empathy, better well-being and less loneliness. Long-term studies also link reading and other mentally stimulating activities with slower cognitive decline and a lower risk of dementia. These studies show associations, not proof that reading itself causes the benefits.

Why it matters

Reading is widely available and inexpensive, so evidence about its possible links to well-being and cognitive health could matter across many ages. The review suggests benefits may extend beyond literacy, while stopping short of proving cause and effect.

What to keep in mind

This was an editorial review of existing studies, not a new trial. Much of the evidence is observational, so it cannot show that reading prevents dementia or directly causes better mental health.

If you're a parent

Ask your child what stories, comics or topics they genuinely enjoy reading, and consider reading or discussing one together.
